Business owner's policy (BOP)

A business owner's policy (BOP) packages general liability and commercial property, and often business income, into one policy for small and mid-sized businesses that fit the insurer's eligibility rules. It can be simpler than buying each policy separately, but it is not a fit for every business, and it does not include commercial auto, workers' compensation, or professional liability.

What business owner's policy commonly covers

Who usually carries it

  • Offices, retail stores, and small service businesses
  • Some contractors and restaurants that meet an insurer's eligibility rules
  • Businesses with a modest amount of property and liability exposure

Commonly covered

  • General liability for injuries and property damage to others
  • Your building, if owned, and business personal property
  • Business income after a covered property loss, in many BOPs
  • Optional additions such as equipment breakdown or hired and non-owned auto

Commonly excluded or limited

  • Commercial auto, workers' compensation, and professional liability
  • Businesses outside the insurer's eligible classes or size limits
  • Tools and equipment away from your premises, unless added
  • Flood and earthquake

This page is general information about how these policies commonly work. Every policy's own forms, endorsements, and exclusions decide what it covers. For advice about your business, talk with a licensed insurance agent.

Before your renewal or your next contract

What to check on your own policy

  • Whether your business still meets the BOP's eligibility rules as it grows
  • Liability limits compared with your contracts and lease
  • Property valuation and business income limits
  • Optional coverages you added, or may be missing, such as equipment breakdown
  • Whether separate policies would fit better as operations change
