Life-event checklist

Insurance checklist for a new boat, camper, or ATV

Your auto and homeowners policies often give little or no coverage to boats, campers, ATVs, and motorcycles. Set up coverage before you drive it home.

Your checklist

  1. Insure it before you take it home

Ask your agent for coverage effective on the purchase date, and have the VIN or hull number ready.

  2. Do not forget the trailer

Trailers may need to be listed on the auto or recreational policy.

  3. Choose agreed value or actual cash value

Agreed value sets the payout in advance; actual cash value subtracts depreciation.

  4. Check your umbrella

Umbrella policies often require recreational vehicles to be listed with minimum liability limits.

Questions to ask your agent

Bring these to your review

  • Does my current auto or home policy give any coverage for this?
  • Is agreed value available?
  • Does my umbrella need to be updated?
