Insurance checklist for a new teen driver

A new driver is one of the biggest changes to a household's auto insurance. Planning ahead avoids surprises, and a few questions can make a real difference in what you pay and how well you are protected.

Your checklist

  1. Ask when to add them

Insurers differ on whether a permit driver must be listed. Ask before your teen drives, and add them once they are licensed.

  2. Decide which vehicle they will drive

Which car a teen is assigned to can affect the premium. Older vehicles may not need collision and comprehensive.

  3. Review liability limits

New drivers bring more risk to everything you own. Many families review liability limits and consider an umbrella at this point.

  4. Ask about discounts

Good student, driver training, and telematics programs are common. Ask what your insurer offers.

  5. Save the ID card on their phone

Put the insurance ID card and your insurer's claims number in their phone, and walk through what to do after an accident.

Questions to ask your agent

Bring these to your review

  • When do we need to list our teen on the policy?
  • How does assigning them to a different vehicle change the premium?
  • Are our liability limits right now that we have a teen driver?
  • Which discounts can we qualify for?
