What to do after…
What to do after a break-in or theft
A break-in leaves people shaken and unsure where to start. Here is a simple order of steps, from making sure you are safe to filing the claim.
Step by step
Safety first
- If you think someone may still be inside, do not go in. Leave and call 911.
- Do not touch anything the burglar may have handled until police have looked.
Call the police and get a report
Insurers commonly require a police report for theft claims. Write down the report number and the officer's name.
Photograph the scene
Record broken doors and windows, damaged locks, and disturbed rooms before cleaning up.
Secure your home or vehicle
Board broken windows and repair or replace locks. Keep receipts; policies commonly expect reasonable steps to prevent further loss.
List what was taken
Describe each item, with brand, model, serial number, age, and value if you know them. Photos, videos, receipts, and bank statements help. A home inventory makes this much easier.
Report it to your insurance company
Call your insurer's claims line with your police report number. Cancel stolen cards and change passwords if devices were taken.
